About Me

I am currently a CS Ph.D student at Duke University, advised by Prof. Cynthia Rudin.

I am broadly interested in Machine Learning, Optimization and Data Mining. My goal is to design simple and interpretable models, which have performance comparable to black-box models, for decision making problems. These techniques can be further applied to interdisciplinary areas with economic, finance and healthcare.

Before joining Duke, I received my B.Sc in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia, with distinction.

FastSurvival: Hidden Computational Blessings in Training Cox Proportional Hazards Models
FastSurvival: Hidden Computational Blessings in Training Cox Proportional Hazards Models

We propose new optimization methods by constructing and minimizing surrogate functions that exploit hidden mathematical structures of the CPH model, producing very sparse high-quality models that were not previously practical to construct.

Optimal Sparse Survival Trees
Optimal Sparse Survival Trees

We propose a dynamic-programming-with-bounds approach to the construction of provably-optimal sparse survival trees. We are often able to find optimal sparse trees in a few seconds.
